Week The Third Part 3. Endnote

I have never used bibliographic management software before, as my undergraduate degree was a mostly practical-skills oriented film and television one and did not involve much essay writing or research, so I never had use for it. So, this week has been a massive learning curve for me.

I felt like I needed extra help, so I booked myself in for a 90 minute Endnote for Beginners hands-on class at RMIT library, which was really helpful for getting my head around the basics.

My Endnote Library, Day 1
I got started by manually typing various book and journal references in, then started tackling databases and exporting titles that I found directly in to Endnote. It was a bit fiddly as I got used to it, but after a few hours I felt like I had progressed a bit.

I went to the library website and downloaded our reference style, Harvard Business, and worked out how to put it into my Endnote program, which felt like a massive achievement!

Working to the RMIT business referencing style

Despite downloading these to my computer, I'm having
trouble when searching the RMIT Library
Catalogue within Endnote
However, I am having trouble with the online searching, especially when trying to connect to the RMIT databases within Endnote. I downloaded the RMIT database connection from the website, yet when I try to search it I get no results back. If anyone has tried this and succeeded, I'd love to hear the details so I can get it to work.

  1. Yes, I found EndNote doesn't connect with the library databases as seamlessly as you would like too. I'm going to ask the reference librarian about that.
